7 Mistakes You're Making With Your Eyelash Extensions This Summer (And How To Fix Them) 💅

Hey Glow Girl! 💖

Summer in State College is literally the best vibe, right? Between hanging out at Arts Fest, hitting up the pool, and sunset dinners downtown, we are all living our best lives! ☀️ But let’s be real, summer can be a total nightmare for your lash extensions if you aren’t careful.

Nothing ruins a summer selfie like a patchy lash line or extensions that just won’t stay put. If you’ve noticed your lashes shedding faster than usual lately, don’t panic, babe! You’re probably just making a few common "summer mistakes."

I’m here to give you the ultimate summer lash blueprint so you can keep those blinkers looking flawless all season long. Let’s get into it! 👇

1. Getting Them Wet (or Sweaty!) Too Fast 🚫

We get it, babe, it’s hot out there! But jumping into the shower or hitting a high-intensity workout right after your appointment is a BIG no.

The Problem

When you get your lashes done, the adhesive needs time to fully cure (aka harden). If you introduce moisture or steam too early, it can cause "shock polymerization," which makes the glue brittle and causes your lashes to pop right off. Not cute.

The Why

Your lash tech at Let’s Glow Girls PSU uses professional-grade adhesive that needs a full 24 to 48 hours to set properly.

The Fix ✨

  • Plan Ahead: Schedule your lash appointment for a day when you can skip the gym.
  • Cool It Down: If you must shower, keep it quick and lukewarm. Avoid directing the water right at your face!

2. The Sunscreen Slip-Up 🧴

Sunscreen is a non-negotiable for that youthful glow, but it can be your lashes' worst enemy.

The Problem

Most sunscreens (especially those dreamy, glowy ones) are packed with oils. Oil is the kryptonite of lash adhesive. It breaks down the bond, leading to a premature "lash funeral." ❌

The Why

Oil literally slides between the extension and your natural lash, dissolving the glue and making the extensions slip right off.

The Fix ✨

  • Oil-Free is Queen: Switch to an oil-free facial sunscreen.
  • Hands Off: Avoid spraying aerosol sunscreen directly on your face. Spray it into your hands first, then carefully pat it onto your skin, avoiding the eye area.
  • Cleanse ASAP: If you feel like some product got on your lashes, wash them immediately with a lash-safe cleanser!

3. The "Pool & Ocean" Neglect 🏊‍♀️

Is there anything better than a dip in the pool? Your lashes think so.

The Problem

Chlorine and salt water are ridiculously drying. If you let pool water or salt dry on your lashes, it can cause them to become stiff, crunchy, and prone to breaking.

The Why

The chemicals in chlorine and the salt in the ocean can react with the adhesive over time, weakening the bond and causing the lashes to tangle.

The Fix ✨

  • The Fresh Water Flush: As soon as you get out of the water, rinse your face and lashes with fresh, clean water.
  • Goggles are Your BFF: If you’re a total mermaid, invest in some cute, leak-proof goggles to keep your lashes dry!
  • Pat, Don't Rub: When drying your face, gently pat around the eyes with a lint-free towel. Never, ever rub!

4. Letting the Heat Get to You 🔥

From outdoor BBQs to blow-drying your hair, heat is everywhere in July.

The Problem

Extreme heat can actually melt the curl right out of synthetic lashes. It can also cause the adhesive to become tacky again, leading to "stickies" (where lashes stick together).

The Why

Lash extensions are often made of a synthetic PBT material that is sensitive to high temperatures. If you stand too close to a hot grill or use a hair dryer on high heat near your face, you could literally singe your lashes!

The Fix ✨

  • Keep Your Distance: Be careful when opening a hot oven or standing over a grill.
  • Cool Air Only: When drying your hair, use the cool setting on your blow dryer when working around your face.
  • Skip the Steam: Limit your time in saunas or steam rooms, save those for the winter months!

5. Travel & Sleeping Sabotage ✈️

Summer travel usually means long flights and sleeping in unfamiliar beds (hello, hotel pillows!).

The Problem

Face-planting into a pillow is the fastest way to crush your extensions. If you’re a side sleeper or a stomach sleeper, you’re likely rubbing your lashes against the fabric all night long.

The Why

Constant friction and pressure during sleep can bend the extensions or pull them out prematurely.

The Fix ✨

  • Silk Everything: Switch to a silk or satin pillowcase. It’s better for your skin, your hair, and your lashes!
  • The Cupped Mask: If you’re traveling, grab a 3D contoured sleep mask. These have "cups" over the eyes so your lashes don't touch the fabric. Chef’s kiss! 💋

6. The "Summer Itch" (Picking & Scratching) 🚫

Allergies, sweat, and humidity can make your eyes feel a little itchy.

The Problem

The second you start picking or rubbing your eyes, you’re done for, babe. Not only will you pull out your extensions, but you’ll likely pull out your natural lashes too! 😱

The Why

Your natural lash cycle is delicate. When you pull an extension, the root of your natural lash can be damaged, leading to "bald spots" in your lash line.

The Fix ✨

  • Brush Them Out: Instead of picking, use a clean spoolie to gently brush through your lashes. This usually relieves the itch!
  • Daily Cleansing Ritual: Use a professional lash shampoo daily to remove pollen, dust, and sweat that might be causing irritation.

7. Ghosting Your Fill Appointments 👻

We know your summer schedule is packed, but don't let your lashes suffer!

The Problem

Trying to "stretch" your lashes for 4 or 5 weeks during the summer is a recipe for a mess. Between the heat, sweat, and faster hair growth in summer, those extensions are going to look grown-out and messy.

The Why

Our hair actually grows faster in the summer due to increased circulation! This means your extensions will move further down the lash shaft quicker, making them heavy and prone to twisting.

The Fix ✨

  • The 2-Week Ritual: Stick to a strict 2-week fill schedule during the summer months.
  • Join the Club: Our memberships make it so easy to stay on track and keep that glow consistent!
  • Book in Advance: State College gets busy! Make sure you have your fills pre-booked so you never have to deal with a lash emergency.
